This is a GREAT book! Reads like its for a teacher working in a school, so the name is misleading. This is one of my most highly recommended books! Viola Spolin really started this whole thing. This books is a bit of a tough read. But, it is the Bible of improv.
Learn about longform, especially the Harold. Mick Napier: Improv Guru. This guy is all about breaking the rules. PLEASE DON'T START HERE. You must get a handle on the rules before you can break them efficiently.
Keith Johnstone is one of the improv gurus. He is insightful, clever, and knowledgeable More from Keith. It really is all about storytelling
Learn more about the most important improv school/theatre/breeding ground. Has some great theory and games, too. This book is a behind the scenes look at Second City. Lots of interviews and such.
This is pretty good. A bit about the business and some games We MUST learn to do musical bits. Audiences love them! There aren't too many books about it. This one is thin, but comes with a CD to sing along with.
This is a book filled with suggestions (Where, Who, What) that you can use to start scenes. It's useful when you don't have an audience to solicit ideas from. OK, this isn't an improv book, but it's one of the very best books for a budding performer. You probably will go on an audition sometime, right? This has more than acting advice. It's got some good living advice, too. It's very good.
